During the selection process among the admissible files, the ARES will take into account the following criteria:

The academic curriculum

The judgment on the academic qualifications of the candidates is based on the diplomas and the lists of courses followed with the results, the teaching or research activities and the publications.

For courses, priority will be given to candidates who do not already hold a postgraduate degree, except in exceptional circumstances duly motivated in the application file.

The benefit of previous scholarships

Priority will be given to candidates who have not already received a scholarship in Belgium.

Professional experience

The ARES awards its grants primarily to candidates who, after their university studies, have had the opportunity to practice a profession in relation to the problems of development. The social impact of work experience is an element of appreciation.

Membership in a partner institution

Applicants working in an institution with which ARES has entered into a partnership, either as part of institutional support, or as part of a development research project or training project in the event of a tie on the other selection criteria, a priority.

The candidate’s commitment to development activities

Special attention will be given to the candidates’ files, who, in addition to their academic qualifications, have shown commitment to development. The commitment is illustrated by having worked with the most disadvantaged social categories and by seeking with them the effective means of defending and promoting their interests.

The criteria of nationality

ARES wishes to diversify the geographical origin of the fellows. It ensures that, for all international courses and internships organized under the “Training, Research & Awareness for Development” program, candidates from sub-Saharan Africa represent 50% of the total workforce.

Gender equality

ARES pays particular attention to the participation of women in international courses and internships organized as part of the “Training, Research & Awareness for Development” program.

Prospects for future reintegration

A maximum of guarantees are required concerning the return of the candidate to his country of origin or to another developing country as well as his reintegration into a profession which will allow him to put the training acquired in Belgium at the service of development (eg contract of employment, formal promise of commitment) and to produce a multiplier effect for the benefit of his country of origin.
The ARES reserves the right, during the selection, to assess the compliance of the dossiers with the selection criteria, taken individually or in combination with each other.
