Fully-funded Irish Government Postgraduate Scholarships Programme is an established national initiative, funded by the Department of Education and Skills and managed by the Council. The Council typically Makes an investment in 280 New Postgraduate Scholarships in Ireland Every year.

In 2018, we invested in a total of 1,193 postgraduate scholars, with over 5,000 individual scholarships for excellent research awarded to date.

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is unique in the Irish research landscape and complements other channels for funded postgraduate education in the Irish eco-system. Among its features are:

  • individual, prestigious awards for excellent research in the name of the applicant;
  • an objective selection process using international, independent expert peer review;
  • funding across all disciplines, from archaeology to zoology;
  • awards for bottom-up, non-directed research, with the exception of those funded by our strategic funding partners.

Highly competitive Irish Government Postgraduate Scholarships
The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarships Programme is highly competitive, with an
average success rate of 18% over the last five years. The programme is globally recognised and
attracts many applications from international students who wish to undertake excellent research in
the Irish higher education and research system. The programme has enjoyed excellent gender
balance across both STEM and AHSS streams.
Successful applicants who become scholars under the programme are recognised as
demonstrating world-class potential as future research leaders.

Financial support for Irish Government Postgraduate Scholarships

  • a stipend of €16,000 per annum
  • a contribution to fees, including non-EU fees, up to a maximum of €5,750 per annum
  • eligible direct research expenses of €2,250 per annum

How to apply for Irish Government Postgraduate Scholarships

Potential applicants should read the 2020 Terms and Conditions carefully to ascertain whether or not they are eligible to apply. Indicative versions of the applicant, supervisor and referee forms are provided for information purposes only. All participants must create and submit their forms via the online system.


  1. The Council requires scholars and their supervisors to have regular contact. Supervisors
    must be based at the same HEI as the scholar.
  2. It is the responsibility of the scholar’s supervisor to ensure that if the scholar leaves their
    HEI or is not dedicating sufficient time or effort to the scholarship, the Council is informed
