Latori Gregory researches ‘drivers of health’ during summer internshipadmin
Latori Gregory is a senior at Elizabeth City State University. She never knew giving back to the community could be a career choice. But now it’s a viable option when she graduates with a degree in business administration.
As a Blue Cross NC summer intern, Gregory is working with the Community & Diversity Engagement Team. She’s spending the summer volunteering and working with local nonprofits.
She’s also researching the drivers of health for the team. Drivers of health determine the health of an individual and are known as the barriers to having good health – such as access to transportation to visit a doctor, healthy foods, and more.
Her research will be used to help make decisions for investments and volunteer opportunities. “I’m excited to see my work used in the company and how it benefits the community,” she said.
Making a difference this summer
“Coming in, I really didn’t know what to expect from my first job in an office, but I’m so glad I’m working with this team,” said Gregory. “I come from a rural area, so I see the issues my community is having. It hits close to home to be able to learn more and give back.”
The countless career paths and opportunities at Blue Cross NC was the most surprising part of the internship. “To be honest, as an insurance company, I thought most of the career opportunities here would be customer service or underwriting,” she said. “I didn’t know how many divisions and specialties beyond health insurance exist here – it’s very exciting.”
But most of all, Gregory is excited to be making a difference this summer. She hopes to take what she’s learned to pursue a career in the health industry. She’s even considering getting a master’s in health administration.
